How to Tell If AI Is Recommending Your Business
The fastest way to find out is to open ChatGPT and ask it for the best company in your category in your town. If you're not in the answer, you're missing a channel you'd never see in your analytics. Beyond that, three free tools now report actual AI citation data: Bing Webmaster Tools, Microsoft Clarity, and your own referral traffic.
I run a $2M junk removal business from 1,200 miles away in under an hour a day. Most owners I talk to have never once checked any of this.
Just ask it
Go ask ChatGPT for the best junk removal company in your town. Or the best plumber, or roofer, or whatever you are. Right now, before you read the rest of this.
This isn't a tool and it isn't a metric. It's the fastest way to find out where you stand, and most owners have never done it a single time.
Run it a few ways. The way a homeowner would phrase it. The way somebody in a hurry would phrase it. With your town, and with the neighboring town you also serve. You'll learn more in five minutes than from any dashboard, because you'll see exactly who is getting named instead of you.
Bing Webmaster Tools, and why Bing suddenly matters
I know how that sounds. Nobody uses Bing.
Use it anyway. Bing's index is part of what feeds ChatGPT's web retrieval. OpenAI also runs its own crawler now, so it isn't purely Bing anymore — but a site Bing has never indexed is a site that's hard for ChatGPT to retrieve at all. It's a floor check. It doesn't matter how well you're doing on Google.
The bigger reason: in February 2026, Microsoft launched a report inside Bing Webmaster Tools called AI Performance. It shows how often your pages got used as a source in AI answers across Copilot and Bing's AI summaries, which pages got cited, and what queries triggered it.
That's first-party citation data, for free. Nobody was giving that to small businesses a year ago.
Setup takes about four minutes and you can import your settings straight from Google Search Console instead of verifying from scratch.
Microsoft Clarity added the same kind of reporting
Clarity is Microsoft's free analytics and heatmap tool. Over the last year it's grown an AI Visibility section that most people don't know is in there.
It reports three things worth looking at: whether AI platforms are citing your content, which AI bots are crawling your site, and how much actual traffic is arriving from AI platforms. It splits that traffic into its own channel, so you can see ChatGPT and Copilot visitors separately from everyone else.
One warning that Microsoft's own documentation makes: a citation count measures references, not prominence. Ten small mentions buried in an answer are not automatically better than one that actually sends you a customer. Compare it against itself month to month. Don't treat it as a score.
Your referral traffic already tells you some of this
You don't need a new tool for this one. Open your analytics and look at where your traffic came from.
Look for chatgpt.com and perplexity.ai in there. Every one of those is a person who asked an AI a question, got pointed at you, and clicked.
It's free, it's already sitting in your account, and almost nobody looks at it.
One caveat so you don't misread it: this undercounts. AI tools often strip the referrer, and plenty of people read the AI answer and then type your name into Google instead of clicking. So treat it as a floor, not a total. A small number there doesn't mean you're not being cited — but a number climbing month over month means something real is happening.
Five signs your SEO is actually working
Citations are one channel. Here's how you tell the whole thing is working, without the vanity numbers.
One. Your traffic turns into calls. Not sessions. Not impressions. Calls. If traffic went up and your phone didn't, something is wrong upstream — usually the pages are pulling the wrong kind of visitor.
Two. You rank for what people search when they need you right now. Not "how to clean out a garage." The searches that arrive with a credit card attached.
Three. People find you without typing your name. If all your traffic is people who already knew about you, that's your reputation working, not your SEO. Different thing, and worth knowing which one you're actually paying for.
Four. You show up in AI answers. Covered above. You'd never see this in your analytics.
Five. It compounds. Every month a little better than the last without you spending more. That's the part ads never do. You stop paying, ads stop cold.
Get all five and you're not just ranking. You're the one getting recommended.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a free way to see if AI is citing my site?
Yes. Bing Webmaster Tools has an AI Performance report showing citations across Copilot and Bing's AI summaries, and Microsoft Clarity has an AI Visibility section covering citations, bot crawls, and AI referral traffic. Both are free.
Why does Bing matter if all my customers use Google?
Bing's index is part of what ChatGPT draws on when it retrieves web results. Being missing from Bing makes you hard to retrieve, regardless of how you're doing on Google.
Does AI referral traffic show up in my analytics?
Some of it. Look for chatgpt.com and perplexity.ai as referral sources. It undercounts, because AI tools often strip the referrer and many people search your name separately after reading the answer.
How often should I check any of this?
Monthly is plenty. These numbers move slowly and reading them weekly leads to reacting to noise.
